Hand-made wines. Literally.
Join us for a non-dogmatic look at the wines of this dynamic young winemaker from Burgenland in Austria
AUSTRIAN WINE TASTING
Tuesday 4th February 2020
6 – 7.30 pm at Walcot Street £25 ppn
On Tuesday 4th February Andreas will talk us through three of his wines as well as generously welcoming us with a glass of sparkling Gruner Veltliner from his friends at Weingut Diwald.
4 wines – plus canapés – Andreas’s hands are all over these remarkable Burgenland wines – quite literally. His labels all depict his own hands in gestures referring to key elements of his work.
This young grower, whose family has made wine since 1800, farms 21 hectares of vineyards in Gols (where wine has been made for 2,000 years and which was part of Hungary until as recently as 1921) in the Pannonian basin on the banks of the Neusiedler See. The area has hot, dry summers and lengthy ripening season. The nearby Lake helps to moderate the climate throughout the year and strong winds aerate the vineyards. The gravelly soils were created from deposits from the Pannonian Sea and offer excellent drainage.
Since 2010, Andreas has farmed biodynamically and is a member of Respekt, a group of ‘young, dynamic and non-dogmatic’ winemakers in Austria, Germany and Hungary.
Andreas grows a variety of grapes including Welschriesling, Neuburger, Sauvignon Blanc, Weisser Burgunder and Blaufrankisch. We will get to taste all of these in one combination or another.
Corkage will whip up a couple of matching bites to accompany the wines.
